The State of Affairs

They read the books on physics
And they heard the wise-men speak
And they dissected the Universe
In less than half a week

They built a thousand towers
And ingenious machines
But they never knew the magic
That an eastern sunrise brings.

They wrote of Einstein’s genius
And the end of time and space
And they clocked the months and ages
And the moon's three-trillionth phase

They timed the speed of light
And marked the planets as they passed
But they never saw the sun
When it sank into the west.

They took a foreign wizard
And they put him on a throne
And they united all the nations
And made a kingdom of their own.

They ruled a race of creatures
Who we used to know as men
And they bound themselves to promises
That brought about their end.

A miracle slipped past them -
Three prophesying stars
And they never even noticed
When the curtain fell apart.

They took the cup of power
And they shook the devil's hand
And they kissed the cursed serpent
When he came out of the sand.

They wove a spell of darkness
And the hope of men was crushed
But when the sun rose on their citadel
It crumbled into dust.

  1. To say anything less than "I love it" would be complete injustice. You write wonderful poetry, and this one is funny, catchy, and at the same time really made me think.

And if you need to konw what's funny, well... "And the moon's three-trillionth phase". *grins*

    GREAT job, Raora.

  4. Raora,
Wow, I think we do have a lot in common! I'm reading a book by Chesterton, I'm often reading something by Lewis, I just read "the eve of st. agnes", I love Waterhouse and Bouguereau paintings, I love The Princess Bride, and we both call ourselves Authoresses. Isn't that a sadly lost word? So often women take on the masculine versions of titles. Also, the only thing I've read so far is this post and your poetry is fantastic. Really, you are very talented. I can't wait to keep reading. So glad we met,
    Everly

  5. Hi Raora, Thank you for your comment and for the congratulations! It's exciting being a published author. *smile* Speaking of which, that's a great poem you wrote, as usual! You have such talent as a poet. :-)

    Have a blessed day,
    Amanda
